Community Rewatch- 2x19, 2x20, & 2x21

So we're moving forward, folks! Only six episodes before the end of the season. Woo! So yeah. No sense it putting it off, right?

2x19- Critical Film Studies

Episode Rundown- This episode was Pulp Fiction and My Dinner with Andre-themed, so to me, having never seen either movie, it was basically useless. It's Abed's birthday and since Jeff and the group are aware of Abed's obsession with movies and Quentin Tarentino films, they decide to throw him a Pulp Fiction-themed birthday party at a diner. Before that, however, Abed asks Jeff to meet him at an upscale, 5-star restaurant and when he does, he finds that Abed is normal. He's grinning, making eye contact, and not making any movie references at all. It's strange. And so not Abed. At the diner, the group waits and nothing interesting happens. Finally, it's revealed that Abed's fancy dinner is just his way of referencing some film called My Dinner with Andre. Then they have Abed's party and everyone's happy, even Jeff who starts out being super cynical and moody, but ends up having a good time. Yay! And then the tag is Abed's birthday dinner, with Troy balking at the not-so-market-priced bill. Then they dine and dash!

What Was Great
~ "Nice sweater. Did it come with a golden retriever?"
~ Abed's Cougar Town obsession and tirade. So so good.
~ "And I said, 'No! That's a girl's costume!' And my mom said, 'It's fine! Indian boys have braids too!' There were only forty-five minutes left to trick-or-treat, so what could I do? I put the damn thing on and I went door to door. And everyone was saying, 'Oh, what a pretty little girl!' And by the third house, I stopped correcting them! Because, at the end of it all, I was just glad they thought I was pretty."
~ "I will give you 1200 dollars to cover damages if you would please give Britta her job back." "800 dollars and she stays fired?" "Deal."
~ The end, where they're all reenacting scenes from the movie (I'm assuming...?). So cute!
~ The tag- "WHAT MARKET ARE YOU SHOPPING AT?"

What Wasn't So Great
~ The episode in general. I just... It wasn't for me.
~ Too much Chang.
~ Pierce irritated me.

Rating
I would give this episode a seven out of ten as well. It's still Community, so I'm going too low here, but I didn't really enjoy this episode...

2x20- Competitive Wine Tasting

Episode Rundown- So this episode... yeah. It's super boring. The Abed storyline is great, the Pierce and Jeff storyline is eh, and the Britta and Troy storyline makes me want to pluck my eyes out. And Shirley and Annie are nowhere to be found. So the main story is that Jeff and Pierce are taking a blowoff class in which they get to sit around and taste wines and while doing so, Jeff hits on an attractive yet annoying Asian women, who blows him off. She takes interest in Pierce instead and that just does not sit well with Jeff. So he investigates and learns the real reason why. Britta and Troy take an acting class and Troy makes up a story about being molested- seriously not cool, Harmon- to get sympathy from his class. He also puts his usual demeanor of verbally attacking Britta left and right aside for an episode to develop a fleeting crush on her. Ugh. And then, the silver lining- Abed takes a class on the TV show Who's the Boss? in which he ends up teaching the professor who the boss clearly is. The tag, however, is also a high point- Troy, in an all-Black production of Fiddler on the Roof entitled Fiddla Please. Hysterical.

What Was Great
~ The entire Abed story was so cute. And the way he maps out the entire show and asks, "...So you can see it's very clear that the boss is-" and the professor, all astounded, responds, "Angela." So adorable!
~ Annie's only line, at the beginning, when she's telling Shirley not to take a joke-telling class. "I dropped after the lesson on set-ups. The professor is so old..."
~ The professor of said Who's the Boss? class and how at the end he opens his drawer to find a gun and a book called "What Was Happenin?" So great. I love when new TV references old TV. <3
~ The brilliant tag! "It's hard to be Jewish, it's hard to be Jewish, it's hard to be Jewish in Russia, yo!"

What Wasn't So Great
~ The Jeff/Pierce storyline
~ Britta and Troy! You have to stop with them. I just cannot.
~ The pretend "molestation" story. It's just not really something to joke about, I think.
~ Chang. Blegh.
~ The lack of Shirley and Annie. Lame.

Rating
This episode is getting a wavering six out of ten from me. Wavering because it probably deserves lower, but Abed's adorableness and Troy in his Jewish-wear saved the episode.

2x21- Paradigms of Human Memory

Episode Rundown- Also known as, in my opinion, the best episode of the second season. This introduced the concept of the fake clip show; in other words, whereas other shows will occasionally flashback to things that happened in the past that we've seen on the show, Community used these flashbacks to show us things that, to our knowledge, never really happened. Genius. So the group is making their final diorama for Anthropology when Annie's Boobs makes an appearance again and Chang all too willingly enters the school vents after him. He returns with a pile of things the monkey's taken and the group then reminisces about things we've never seen them do- visit a ghost town, fill in for the glee club, go camping, paint Shirley's nursery, and so, so much more. It's the most amazing thing ever and Dan Harmon is a genius for thinking of it. But they insult the Dean in the meantime and therefore the tag is an animated version of him exacting his revenge. Classic.

What Was Great
~ Absolutely everything. It's my absolute favorite episode of the second season and nothing in the episode feels out of place. It's legit perfect.

What Wasn't So Great
~ Absolutely nothing. ;)

Rating
This episode is obviously getting a well-deserved ten out of ten. It's fabulous.

We're entering the final stretch, now! Be on the lookout for more!
